Half Marathon

I'm fighting my natural tendency to overextend myself. Rather, my tendency to followup one or two good workouts with a grandiose proclamation of intent. I'm not running a marathon this year. I'd like to run a half marathon.

I've been looking at Higdon's Half Marathon training calendars. I'm thinking Novice best fits my situation. My aerobic level is already pretty high but, I haven't sustained a good regimen for most of the Summer. I'm uncertain how my legs will hold up. I think if I give myself 8 weeks I can run a half marathon this year. At my current fitness level I figure I could be in Week 5 of Higdon's 12 week schedule, I should be able to run a half marathon on November 4th.

I've looked at the race calendar on Coolrunning. There's a half mary being run on the same day as a full Marathon in Manchester New Hampshire. The entrance fee if I register before 10/31 is $35. The full marathon is $45. Alka has rubbed off on me. I'd prefer to run the full marathon; it's cheaper per mile. There's no way that's going to happen this year. Even if I run the half I'm highly skeptical I'll be able to post a better time than last year's Applefest. A dilemna. November is pretty late in the New England race calendar. With the exception of some Turkey Trots or Jingle Bell runs there are not many races run in late Fall, certainly no half marathons.

Screw it. I'll save the $35 to spend on winter running gear. I'll just have my own half marathon on November 4th. What to do I call it? I just checked out the History Channel's website for that day in history. I could commemorate the takeover of the American embassy in Tehran back in '79. Reagan got elected in 1980 on that day. Clinton in '92. Nah. The actress Loretta Switt was born back in 1944 & although I like the alliteration of the Hotlips Houlihan Half Marathon I don't think I'll go with that one either...

Howard Carter discovered King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. Mummies are cool. Ancient Egypt is cool. That's it.

The 1st Annual King Tut's Half Marathon of North Leominster is being held on November 4th 2007. Course, starting time, amenities, to be determined. It will not be a certified course.

Should I notify Coolrunning?

Hey I ran my own fake race a few weeks ago to prep and I'll tell you the grand prize was pretty awesome and I didn't have to split it with anyone. I didn't put it on the CoolRunning calendar, but I might just do that next time!

Oh, man! Do you think I'll be recovered enough from the marathon to run this puppy? I love King Tut!

If you're recovered, you're invited.
Big fan of ancient cultures.
I'm working out a route for my half. So far, I've got one 13.2 mile route plotted out with three loops using my home as the start, finish,& water stops.
I did the map on Running Ahead. I'll leave the map public. When I figure out how to link it I'll attach it to the blog.
