I was on-line yesterday on the Guys On a Diet message boards. A couple of the threads dealt with the differences between men & women regarding weight-loss. A couple of guys complained they get treated differently at WW meetings than women; they have to deal with snide comments from some female WW'ers. A couple of the guys couldn't decide if they wanted to keep going to meetings in such a "hostile" environment.
I don't know. I've usually been the only guy at my meetings (lately a couple of husband/wife teams have been attending, losing collective weight put on during pregnancy is my guess). Everybody, including the leader has always been very nice. I've been going to meetings since March & notice there's been a big turnover of attendees. There's only three women I've seen at almost all the meetings. I guess this is typical.
I have noticed I lose weight faster than the women in my group. I exercise regularly, 5-6 days a week. That gives me an edge. I understand men have greater muscle mass & that's an advantage: we burn more calories. I understand not having to deal with feminine issues like periods & menopause is to our advantage too. I've read weight-loss is more of an emotional issue with women. I don't know. I've seen women get weepy at meetings over not being able to drop a few but, I've lurked on a lot of the GOAD threads & there's a lot of whining there too.
WW is geared more towards women than men. Most of their clients are women. I understand that. Men can have great success with their program but, sometimes it's an awkward fit but, if you're getting good results, who cares? Why would anyone, guy or gal, gave a crap what somebody said to them at a meeting if they're having successful weight-loss. Is it more of people being just too freakin's sensitive & looking for ways to be offended? I say to GOAD's whining about catty comments at ameeting "Grow a Pair."
To each their own, but, a lot of the GOAD threads seem just too "chick-like". It seems like a lot of whiny titty babies, boo-hooing over really lame stuff. I guess the same could be said of a lot of the threads on WW. Maybe it's just a lot of people at work who's supervisors should really give them more work to do.
I like the Let's Get Running thread on the Veggie board. No whining, very positive, the weight-loss theme is understated, & everybody seems really cool. I'm the only guy I see posting there regularly & everybody's always been very friendly. Maybe I just got lucky.
I'm Pete.
