Afternoon Delight: Fuck All That

What a boob.

Afternoon delight my ass.

I wrote my last entry on May 5th. Since then I have been laid up for about a month with a sore Achilles tendon.

I never stretch before a run & it finally caught up to me. That coupled with my "afternoon delight" route having a steep hill right at the beginning put too much of a strain on my left heel. I also didn't start treating it right away. I just assumed being stiff in the morning was just a byproduct of being a runner in my 40's. Wrong.

I took almost a month off. Virtually no running at all. I now stretch. I now ice after a run. I now take ibuprofen after a run. I'm also alternating rowing with running. I ice after rowing too. Things are gradually getting better. A part of me thinks I should maybe take more time off but, I don't want to.

Tejal, Alka's cousin, a physical therapist, told me there may come a time in my life when I can't run. Fuck that. What a quack.

Stretch.
Run.
Stretch.
Ice.
Ibuprofen.

Screw sitting on the bench. I'm a runner.

1. I keep telling myself that I am not so juvenile and inappropriate as to giggle at the phrase "stiff in the morning", so I am just going to ignore that part of your post.

2. You're doing a great job of honoring the discomfort and not overdoing it like a dumbass, therefore prolonging/increasing your injury. Recovering slowly and mindfully will help you remain a runner into the future. Being overeager and impatient changes that to past-tense only.

"Stiff in the morning" I love the fact you went there.

I tend to be an optimist. It's for the best. All things happen for a reason. Besides resuming rowing has started to grow calluses on my hands. Calluses make me feel so rugged.

Good for you - hang in there!!! From my own experience, I have become a believer that time off can heal anything.

Hang in there & keep on icing & taking ibuprofen! :)
