WI Result & other Musings

Well I finally did it. I posted a weight gain on Wednesday night: one pound. It's not the end of the world. I was disappointed but, not too surprised. As I said earlier I have not been journaling really well & had been overindulging a bit (the Jarlsburg cheese, ice cream, & steak tips were worth it). I am journaling again & am continuing with the exercising. I expect to resume posting a weight loss next week.

Last night I went for my longest run in 20 years. I ran 8 miles. It was hot & humid & threatening rain & thundershowers (I saw heat lightning throughout most of the run) but, with the help of DD's Ipod I lumbered through. I was sopping wet with sweat when I was done; I wrung my shirt out over the sink before I thew it in the hamper.

I told DW I had just 8 miles & she asked me "Why?". I was hoping for an "Attaboy" but, I realized she's never know me as a runner. I ran my last marathon in 1983. I've only know her for 10 years. I've always been oveweight to her. It's only been in the last 2-3 years that I've lost weight & started exercising regularly. It's part of my family's nightly routine that I go off and exercise after dinner. Formerly I considered myself a guy trying to lose weight & get in shape using a variety of exercises. Now I consider myself a runner who crosstrains & watches what he eats. It's a fundamental shift in my perception. I don't think DD or DW yet understand what's happened.

What I hope to accomplish with my running is to continue to increase my mileage with an eventual return to marathoning. I'm already scheduled for a half marathon in September. I would like to run some road races this summer. With the big housepainting project we've taken on I'm not sure I'm going to have much chance. I train by myself but, I have experienced a sense of camraderie from all the wonderful people who post on the Let's Get Running thread. I also want to experience the buzz of a road race again. I'm going to be in Vermont in July. The Jay Half Marathon is on the 29th. It's an 18 miler & sounds like a ballbuster, an actual mountain run. I don't know about that; might be a little too early but, I'll keep looking.
