Priyanka is going to Philmont, NM with the Boy Scouts this summer.
Technically she'll be attending as an Explorer (female scout). The Explorers go on trips like the Boy Scouts: climbing mountains, scuba diving, stuff like that. Girls Scouts go on suck-ass camping trips. I think the Girl Scouts of America think hiking makes a young lady's uterus fall out. Similar to the attitude once held about women & marathoning.
My oldest brother,Bob is the Scoutmaster for his troop. He's gone to Philmont before with his oldest son. He'll be going this year with his youngest son. I'd love to go with Priyanka but, I can't. My testicles make me ineligible. There's a long waiting list of adult males who want to with their sons. A lot of men would have to drop out before I could go. Alka could walk right in & sign up today. She doesn't want to go backpacking for 15 days in the mountains of New Mexico & I can respect that.
Priyanka will be attending Philmont as 1 of 4 girls in her Explorer troop. My brother will be going, as well as my nephew. I'm jealous.
A big part of the appeal of Philmont for Priyanka is she will be doing a "very big thing" without her parents tagging along. Most teenage girls have some issues with self esteem. I think this will be a big boost to Priyanka's self esteem & confidence. I love it.
This weekend Priyanka's going on her first camping trip with the Boy Scout/Explorers. She'll be going on several mandatory trips that will give her useful experience leading up to Philmont in July. She'll be going on a hike with a full backpack,25 lbs of gear. It's going to be cold this weekend,mid 20's at night. It'll be hard but, I think fun. I'm happy for her.
I'm also happy for me. Alka & I will have the weekend to ourselves, which doesn't happen often. As for not attending Philmont myself, when Priyanka's in New Mexico for two weeks I'm planning on running in the Jay Mountain Half Marathon in Vermot. Not a bad 2nd choice. Maybe Alka & I will use those two weeks to have the honeymoon we never went on two years ago.

I didn't know Girl Scouts sucked so much! Good information to have. Girls should get out and go to NM and camp and hike and everything else.
You'll miss; she'll miss you. And you won't miss her and she won't miss you.
Girl scouts spend more timing making sure the dishes are clean (washed twice in hot,soapy water,soaked in bleach once) & making sure the campfire is put out at night (water poured on coal,stirred with stick until no more smoke)than having fun camping. The BSA has some pretty backwards views on things themselve but, at least they spend more time hiking & cooking than selling cookies.
